In my opinion you the better option is to buy a above ground pool. The reason is because if you ever sell the house the new buyers have the option of taking the pool out to free up backyard space. If space isn't an issue a in ground pool may be the way to go!
I like in ground pools way better. They look nicer and if you have enough room in your backyard I would definatly do an in-ground pool. The only bad thing is that you are looking at a lot more money to make sure your clear for digging and hiring out people to build it.
Above grounds are good for smaller yards and if you possibly want to bring the pool with you if you move away from that home.
